For Japan, yes

I know its Japan but I always had the impression that the PS2 sold like hotcakes because of the DVD player. I expected more after 6 years.

It sold like hotcakes because of the amount of games available and brand power. It just came off the PS1 success and had almost all the 3rd party support. DVD did help a little bit but most people didn't even know about it. (I was one of them)
