That's all? Packing in a Pro Controller to really drive the point home that the Wii U is the true successor to the GC, the system that didn't get anywhere, even at the low price of $99? Your second point is about preparation, not reaction.

Fact is that the removal of Kinect was an incredible easy solution that didn't require any work. The Wii U's entire OS is designed around the Gamepad, plus quite a few games have at least some mandatory Gamepad use; that's a lot of patches to be made in order to provide a coherent experience. Nevermind that doing that would have reduced the Wii U to a GameCube, so the struggles were pretty much guaranteed to continue, if not going to get worse due to an identity crisis. On the other hand, Microsoft already stated before the Xbox One launch that people who don't like Kinect don't have to plug it in for the console to work.

While it's true that GC didn't get anywhere it's doing much better than what the WII U could ever hope for now ... This isn't about trying to hit a homerun as that is practically determined before the console generation began. This is about putting in some effort to change the image of a product.

Just because removing the kinect was an incredibly easy solution doesn't mean Microsoft didn't flat out react unlike Nintendo. If losing money wasn't an option then stagnation is even worse.
