Like Microsoft with the kinect, Nintendo could have opted to drop the gamepad in favour of packing the WII U pro controller to make the WII U cheaper. They had an entire year to capitalize on that decision ... Nintendo could have also being better prepared when they had the whole damn generation to learn how hard it was to make an expensive HD game. It's quite clear that Nintendo missed the entire note that games are supposed to sell the console instead of the hardware.
The fact is Microsoft was more determined to compete against Sony as evidenced by their removal of kinect to get a more competitive price.
