Oh...I just read up. Deals with  gold is the new initiative with stronger sales to combat PSN+ discounts. It was renamed from the "Deal of the Week" which has existed since 2009. Things are about to get interesting now because those old deals were a joke. Thanks to Valve, Sony started doing discounts and thanks to Sony, Microsoft followed suit. Competition is a hell of a thing and the deals are great all around now.

Seems like you've already done some research.  I don't know about those old deals being a joke.  If they were discounts, then what's the problem?  I think I got Prince of Persia 2009 (can't remember the subtitle) for like $5 from one of those deals.
