I can't believe that you really believe that.  They should have had an account system set up years ago after seeing how popular it was with Xbox and Playstation.  They should have improved their online infrastructure when the Xbox showed how important that would become.  They should have improved their online store experience long ago.  They should have diversified their game output, they should have been working to improve their relationships with western developers.  These are areas of success for Sony and Microsoft that are as plain as day.  Replicating these areas of success, which most customers wanted, would have done nothing to stifle Nintendo's creativity.  The only effect would have been to more level the playing field.
