You might miss out on the actual "storyline" involving Totori's mum if you're not prompt with stuff when that's available, but you can always do that on a later playthrough if you wish.  I managed to get it all done without using a guide, though (apart from the "true" ending).

Great, I feel much better. 

I don't mind missing out on some stuff on my first playthrough, it is my first Atelier game after all. I just don't like feeling rushed to do something or get a game over or something like that.
