Fox tends to dislike shows it doesn't have complete control over, especially the money rights. The less control they have, the more likely cancellation will be.
That's how Futurama got canceled. Groenig learned his lesson with the Simpsons and didn't sign everything but the kitchen sink over to Fox. This led to Fox doing everything it could to get the show canceled. They would schedule it guaranteeing the show would be time shifted due to football. In addition, they showed new episodes sporadically. Even with these obstacles the show got good ratings, but Fox still canceled it.
