The problem, the way I see it, is that Insomniac often don't seem to know which direction to take. They appear to have a leadership problem, in terms of overall vision for a project. They can focus intensely on certain areas, quite often to the detriment of others. So while some pieces of a game are really well designed, others are down right bizarrely flawed. They went in circles with Ratchet and Clank for the entire of the 7th gen. They started off with their new IP Resistance, took it in a totally new direction, then tried to settle in the middle with the final installment. When you put everything together, you start to wonder- who is calling the shots at the studio? And what is the reasoning behind some of their decisions? They haven't been able to make a completely solid game in 5 years, and that was a continuation of an existing franchise with 6 previous releases, essentially their bread and butter. Im just skeptical about anything from them, after being hyped and excited about projects of theirs in the past, to sitting there playing them, slightly puzzled. |
I agree with a lot of what you said here but I don't see how really much of any of this applies to Sunset Overdrive? It was clear as day Insomniac seemed lost on where to go with Resistance and FUSE but everything we've seen today looks as laser focused on what this game is as the CGI unveil was.
In fact the gameplay looks about as faithful to a CG trailer as I've ever seen. I think Insomniac is all hands on deck on this one and honestly I think this is the most excited to release a game I've ever seen this studio.
All you have to do is looke at the pretty much everywhere on the internet right now that flipping out about this game. Everything is pointing towards Sunset delivering and in a big way.
