I was thinking of importing the Asian SAO as well, but what will we do if patches or valuable DLC come out?...

If you're in Europe like me, it's this or nothing.  I suppose you could make an NA account and buy that version when it comes out, but that means either reformatting your Vita to play a US account which is a load of hassle just for one game, or buying another Vita.

It looks like there's absolutely tonnes of base game so I'm happy enough with this for now.

In my opinion, if you are a Vita fan, and a JRPG/RPG fan, then your Vita needs to be tied to an US account. Simply because of the number of games, as well as the price difference for the digital downloads. And it can still play any retail game you buy in Europe.

That's what I've done from the start, and also on PS4. The money I save on digital downloads is huge, I basically get every 4th game for free.
