You areright for the most part. Usually you just need to power level to beat a RPG and most of them are not very challenging even for under leveled party. However there are some RPGs where brute force gets you killed sooner.
Fire Emblem RD, YS 6, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Legend of Legaia. In SMT Nocturne, for example, you can die at random battles with a party at level 99 and the best equipment avaible. In Fire Emblem there are no random battles and once a unit die it is dead forever. It doesn`t help that most of your units can be killed in one hit (normal setting and up) and that the enemies outnumber you 3/1.
