While I'm sure there are many different reasons, these are the 3 that I think are most prevalent:

1- 'Hardcore' gamer - I will purchase third party games on my other console or pc, because it won't be a rushed port or gimped in some way.

2- Nintendo only 'Hardcore' gamer - I've been conditioned (by decades of terrible games and poor treatment) to think that all 3rd party games are rubbish. -or- I don't know anything about this game, because even though this is the 5th installment, the first 4 were never available to me.

3- Average consumer - I only have $50. I'm going to buy a game that I know I will enjoy (Mario Kart).

I think the real question should be: Why on earth would 3rd party games sell well on Nintendo consoles? Markets don't just magically exist. They have to be created and fostered. Nintendo has done a great job creating and fostering a market for their games. Third parties have done little to nothing in that regard (regardless of the reasons or excuses why).
