I think there is no difference between offering the X1 for $500 or $800 in China, because the middle class won't be able to afford it even at $500, while (video console fans of) the higher class would still buy it at $800 or more.
Going cheaper makes no sense if you don't expect to broaden your market by a lot with that move.
