Surely you see the advantages of going from the snes pad to analogue sticks and triggers.  I was amazed at the level of control improvement going from the snes to n64 for games like pilotwings it allowed much better positioning in that 3D world.  I don't know if your just being defensive for Nintendo or simply like more simplistic controls but I don't think you represent the majority.
