Good question. I'm pretty sure that under the terms of NBA ownership you are subject to all aspects of the NBA's corporate constitution and therefore when this inevitably goes to court I get a sense it will be upheld.

They could outright ban his entire franchise basically cutting him out of the league so this seems like a better way to get him to sell his team and all-together cut ties.
