At this point the only real solution is to branch the series. Continue to make the action style Resident Evil games because they sell. Also make a more retro RE that focuses on the more classic elements. That way you can appease both sets of fans and set expectations appropriately. Then Capcom can also milk more REs and everyone should be satisfied. The only argument I can see that solution causing is both camps arguing over which is now RE an which is the gaiden.
