On my first play-through of Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, while I was still feeling like a beast because of the legendary weapons I'd farmed from the final boss, I had two Super Badass Bullymongs spawn on me after I killed a normal Bullymong. They ripped me into little tiny pieces. I raged so hard. It's more of a difficulty cliff than a curve.
A lot of stuff in UVHM seems to destroy your shields AND knock you down to 1 health in just one hit. I wouldn't mind that so much EXCEPT for the massive penalty that death brings. That's one thing I don't like, how that penalty keeps me playing conservative.
