I believe Microsoft's REAL intention was not to sell more than the PS3's version but to STEAL away potential buyers from the PS3. Yes, Microsoft is out $50 mil but as long as they have at least 30% of all total sales as Sony had probably 100% sales in the PS1/PS2 eras, then taking market share from Sony might not be such a bad thing. Sony makes LESS money and Microsoft MAKES money.
Now as Microsoft payed a hefty fine so I'll go out and say if they sold 1-2 million more or less than the PS3's version than it's mission accomplished for Microsoft.
