That rubber banding BS started from Black Ops. In fact I used to call it "Getting Treyarched" whenever I got shot around the corner. MW2 had absolutely beautiful hit detection and lag was a minor issue, but MW3 was just a nightmare in terms of connectivity.

Agree 100%

I think Ghosts was a step in the right direction in terms of putting dedis in, but it seems there was some shady stuff going on behind the back about whether dedis are always present. Although the rubber banding is less, that's a lot to do with the engine itself that causes the rubber banding effect rather than just P2P or dedis. So hopefully this year's COD can really improve upon the connectivity given it has had a longer than normal dev time.

Hard for me to say.  Some matches I would do great, even dominate, others I'd be bottom 2 people.  Same lobby of players.  It almost feels like they are using some variables to handle the lag that we are not privy to (as you put it, in the engine).  Furthermore, those variables appear to change possibly linked to, or independent of, who the host is.  Finally, I don't think they ever switched to full dedicated servers.  My understanding was they used a multi peer host, meaning if one host dropped, the game would still go on on the second host (avoiding host migration).

THE BEST, and only real way to do this in 2014 is FULL, TRUE dedicated servers.  ALA Titanfall.  Afterall, we do pay for online service, it's a value add people need to start expecting in 2014 and beyond, especially from this lead franchise.  Shame on COD for letting TF beat them to the punch.

All I know, is that I usually have 20-30ms ping, so my internet connection is probably slightly above average.  I can tell you I was incredibly frustrated with Ghosts (although maybe slightly less than MW3, the worst), and loving Titanfall. Lag WTF moments in Titanfall are MUCH fewer and far between.  Afterall, we ARE playing on the internet, so it will never be 100% perfect, but TF is a good start.

Finally, your comment on the engine is accurate to some degree.  But all things equal, including the engine, dedicated servers will be better than peer hosting.  Always.  The ONLY reason to NOT use dedicated servers is... you guessed it, money.  Which COD has made plenty of to justify it.  I sometimes think they believe most people won't notice, so why bother.  Sad thing is they may have been right for a while, but hopefully games like TF open up peoples eyes.

Comments above.  Good post.
