I forget what consequences there were as a result of the scheme with the Bank of Scotland, investors, and the two colonies in the UK, but what it did essentially do was mark the end of Scotland's dominance as an economic force.  Minor shareholders, most of the population of Scotland, lost their entire investment, but major shareholders, in a deal with Westminster, were compensated for their losses as I recall.

The BBC Series, A History of Scotland, covers this.  A great series if you want a brief overview of Scottish history.


Sounds interesting, I'll definitely check it out. Would be worth knowing the history of half my family haha.
