500,000 - H/W in Europe (300k at launch + 200k rest of month
As for these December XBox 360 sales figures, although according to Microsoft they shipped 500k to Europe in 2005, according the VGcharts and other sources actual hardware sales were closer to 390k:

I don't think the European PS3 release delay will have much of a negative effect for the long run (the PSX and PS2 with much longer delays performed just fine). there's an important firmware update coming up and an impressive list of 36 launch games including Motorstorm, Resistance, Virtua Figher 5, Oblivion, Formula One, Tekken 5 DR, Lemmings, etc. That sounds like a much more interesting launch than Japan and North America received.
