As others have stated, N64 and GC flopped.

As for "standard" industry trends, Nintendo tends to let them cook for a few years before moving in. Case in point: Achievements. They were the hottest shit for a few years but everyone doesn't really care much about them anymore.

Also, Paid DLC. Remember the days when Oblivion shovelled out Horse Armor? DLC has gotten better in recent years (though it still gets abused) but Nintendo's handling of DLC in games like Fire Emblem is good. They waited for the concept to mature.
