Yes, but 3DS also had a bigger install base than Wii U at the time and it was more accessible to the mass market due to the lower price of the 3DS compared to the Wii U. There's also the perception issue that the Wii U currently has which is sure to hold Mario Kart 8 back, many people see it as an overpriced, underpowered console with little 3rd party support. 

3DS have 2.72 milion before MK7 coming in USA.

Wii U have for now 2.54, and sold 15-20k on week in USA.

So, before MK coming at 2.65 milion will sold Wii U, and for me it exceeds 3DS before MK.

So, MK8 will have minimum 300,000 pre order, and maybe 450-500k.

For me will have 400,000, -23,000 of 7.
