It is simple. The most televised football leagues around the world would be EPL, then the Spanish League. Those players get more exposures than others.
Look at MIchael Jordan for example. Do you think he would be that well known around the world if he played his whole career in a crappy basketball league outside the NBA?

I mean, maybe EPL and La Liga have more exposure, but no one can seriously say Serie A es irrelevant or a crappy league.
Hell, Serie A has the same number of titles(12) in Champions league and more second places, Milan has more titles than any English Club, and 1 was won with Pirlo in the team
Pirlo has already been world champion with Italian national team, second to brazil with more world cup titles(5 and 4)

Sorry I wasn't intenting to link crappy to football for the italian league. Just that NBA really is the only good basketball league to gain world fame in hence the term used for that case.
I'm not saying he isn't famous but over all Rooney because of the better world wide exposure would be more famous to the general public who arn't real huge football fans.
