I was under the impression WoW was only subscription based. 

I'm talking about games that make you pay 40-60$ to actually buy the game AND THEN another 10-15$ subscription fee to actually play, such as the recent Elder Scrolls Online. You have to buy the 60$ game and then pay a subscription fee per month to play that 60$ game.
