These things are not mutually exclusive. In the console business costs are cut, one company cuts, and any company offering a similar product cuts not too much later. The last two gens are a great example. This only starts to fail at the very end of a cycle (as seen recently). In other words, 5-7 years from now.
I wouldn't have him waste his associate's money either. Quite aside from the fact that as it is clear which system best meets his gaming needs, he would be best equipped to be gaming for the next several years if he owned that system.
