How come the NHL is'nt more popular in America.

Since when is the NHL not popular in the US? There is a huge following, especially in places where it snows.  I live in the middle of the desert in the US and there are tons of NHL fans and buds and I go watch NCAA games.  It's my 3rd fav sport.
