oh man so many things to consider, and i can't be fucked to write it all down.
I learnt all my stuff from youtube users MTG Xerxes, Marriland, TSP and Utton back in the early days of diamond and pearl before Smogon emerged as a large player - just watch youtube videos battle with commentary you will eventually learn all the intricacies.
