There's a lot of dubious to be found here, but this line exudes the most BS. There's absolutely no reason for Apple to include NFC in their phones.
I can imagine Apple launching a larger iPhone, just not at the expense of the flagship-class 4" model everybody knows. Just like the iPad Mini and iPad Air, expect two devices with all the same features, just slighty different sizes.
As for an iPhablet, I'll believe it when I see it.
Edit: And it's not clear if sapphire is really a good solution for screens or not. Super hard means extra scratch resistant, but extra prone to shattering. Shattering isn't a problem where the crystal is in use today, on buttons and lens covers, but it would certainly be an issue for screens. The problem may be addressable with laminates or treatments of some kind.
I suspect Apple's sapphire investments may have more to do with unannounced products than new iPhones and iPads.

The NFC chip in androids are very useful. I've wondered why Apple hasn't added one yet.
From sharing info directly between phones/tablets extremely easily, to paying for things in most stores, to creating your own tap and go settings... its awesome.

NFC as a payment platform is foundering. Retailers don't like it, consumers don't like it.

As for sharing data, Bluetooth 4.0 accomplishes the same task with far greater performance and range.
The only advantage NFC offers is scanning of unpowered tags, but that's a feature that people already aren't using QR codes for. Again with better range.
