It's probably not just you King. Since the SNES era there has been a pattern of Square and i believe a couple other companies making the Japanese versions of games easier then their American counterparts.
Right around Final Fantasy 6 I belive. FF4 actually being easier then 6. 6 being harder and having things like those 8 Dragons which japanese playtesters deemed too hard.
