MS bought Nokia because they needed them, not to create a niche gaming mobile :P They have a strong hold on the PC market, a decent grip on the living room and a comparatively tiny portion of the mobile market (arguably the biggest of three right now, at least in terms of revenue). Buying Nokia secures them a valuable brand to help them push their OS forwards in that area.
I actually quite like Windows 8 on mobile, so i hope they can find more success than they currently have. I do hope they stop pretending the metro design isn't completely awful for PC though ¬_¬ If W9 follows this same theme i'll end up stuck on 7 for ages.
