A 5 year old computer that cost 400$ surely cant play most of the modern day games? Perhaps a modern pc that costs around that much...

Was that a mistake?

Edit: For that amount of money 5 years ago you could probably get a HD5770 and an i3 in late 2009. I really dont think that setup would be ideal for gaming as of right now. And thats excluding other mandatory costs.

i got for ~$500 an i7-860@3.8ghz, 4gb ram and a hd5770 late 2009
while you can play them you wont be able to at 1080p60 on high, at best low-medium with 2x aa maybe 30fps on medium/high without aa at best (bf4, thief etc.)

thats maybe why i upgraded 6month ago, but only because my mothers pc died and I gave her my old pc and I then got a new one for ~$500 again.
now I got an i5-4670k@4.4ghz, 8gb ram, and a hd7870/rx270

now with that you can play those multiplat games like thief in a higher res and fps than the ps4/bone counterpart, but thats only because the console games are at the beginning and they don't know how to optimize it 100% for consoles.

I hope I can keep this pc for the whole gen, maybe at the end of the gen 1080p30 medium only, but thats fine.

for console exclusives you still need a console. getting a ps4 soon in addition to my wiiu.

What about powersupply, case, mobo, OS and peripherals? We not speaking about the cost of upgrading we speaking about the cost of a new PC 5 years ago. A 5770 should be fine if you see my update but you probably wont be able to get an i7. If you factor in all of the additional costs then it probably wont hold up well today.
