Yeah... but a few problems.

First, how much does one of those phones cost? I would guess around 350 dollars/euros, if not more.

Second, from those that buy it, how many buy games on it?

Third, a game like that would involve high development costs. Do you think they can sell it for 5 dollars/euros or something?

Conclusion: No, things are not that simple. Phones work with low budget mindless games. A cinematic experience from the likes you have on dedicated handhelds? It will hit the exact same walls the handheld consoles do.

I think the doom is not for the dedicated handhelds, but the whole handheld market. The choke point will make it impossible to deliver better experiences due to financial constraints and clashing business models.

Nexus phones are $350 off contract straight from Google.

Mobile gaming is growing rapidly. Just today an article came out showing its 50% of Japan's gaming market.

Mobile marketplace is not like console/pc. They could sell it for far less and make just as much money. Especially if they continue to leave ads in.

I've saying for a couple years now that mobile will rival consoles and pcs soon. I figured Google/Apple would make their large push in 2013. Seems I was a bit early on that. Seems like they are more content on marginal changes than a big push at this point.

Adds are variable revenue. If it was that meaningful, why arent they doing it with current handhelds yet? Surely the 3DS has enough of an audience.

The only game i can recall that uses in-game adds is Gran turismo. The game was still sold at full price.
