Ok, I was thinking he might have had some mental issues but it turns out that's exactly the case.


Not really. Depression is firstly emotional, secondly mental, and anxiety is a symptom of depression. 


Depression affects your physical and mental state. Mentally you'll not feel pleasure and feel helpless. Physically your body will ache, you'll be fatigued and lethargic, and you'll have insomnia.

Just because anxiey can be a symptom of depression doesn't mean it should be discounted. Distress and irrational behavior occur disproportionate to their cause - it's like a fight-or-flight response triggered by nonthreatening things. 

And if he had skipped/forgotten to take his medications for two days; it likely had a serious affect on his mood and actions, like irritability and irrational behavior.
