I know that for ywars, Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma kept a some kind of continuity record. I'm also certain that the canon had most likely been redone many times, but the fans wanted it and Nintendo finally gave in. As for reliving the same events, real life history is the same way. How many times has humanity repeated the same mistakes? How many times should we have learned from the past but have not? To me, that's not surprising. What is surprising is when fictional history is written and turns out to be true. Actually, that's more scary than surprising.
