It's kind of hard to miss when the game makes a lot of references to a previous game in the timeline.

but story is such a small part of a zelda game, it is about exploration and solving puzzles. If it was an RPG I could see getting upset about it, but for this type of game it just doesn't bother me.
Plus, you are mostly talking about stuff that happened in a link to the past. In the timeline that is like 4 games back or something like that. link between worlds takes place centuries after link to the past. I think links awakening is the game that is supposed to be immediately prior to it if I remember correctly.

There are three games in between the two. All three of them feature the same Link from Link to the Past. Zelda's story is one of the most contributing factors. As far as gameplay goes, like I said, I would have been satisfied replaying Link to the Past.
