That's basically what I do lol, may I ask what the issue is with doing that? Bad for the console?

Poor ventilation, dust particles, it could get stepped on, improvised weapon in a fist fight when your opponent has you pinned to the ground--It's just not a good idea.

you forget the random static charges that come from carpet as well!  I remember carpet was a big system killer for the original xbox...
