The 3DS had a hugely inflated margin which allowed for seemingly drastic price cut. The Wii U was already unprofitable at launch. Those two situations can't really be compared.
Microsoft isn't afraid of loss-leading, though. Nintendo, though they can afford it, won't take a deep loss even in the interests of stimulating growth. Not that I blame Nintendo, as another $50 off or so probably wouldn't have much of an effect. The Wii U's problems run a lot deeper than that. Better to wait until the holidays, coupled with the launch of significant software.
