He had an CRT 1080i. HD CRTs simply suck (yes I know better colors yada yada), doesn't have anything to do with the resolution.

 

crts are actually better in pretty much every way the problem is that they are large (not flat panel) and they don't make them bigger than 36"

and u aren't gonna notice as much of a difference on a <37" tv as you will on a 50+" tv

but same-size crt picture is better than lcds in pretty much every way

 

There is a reason why CRT HDTV are not bigger than 36". LCD are a lot more sharper especially on the sides of the screen since a crt loses sharpness the more the ray is bend. Also a crt flashes while a lcd doesn't so it a lot easier on the eyes. LCD has less glare and better image brightness as well the ability to lower the backlight according to the surrounding light

The only advantage CRT has that I can think of would be:

1) true colors (lcd comes up a little short)

2) Pixels are not fited so it can run different resolutions by adjusting the amount of pixels. Thus can upscale faster and better.
