While the kid definitely was out of line, and some legal punishment is justified, the charges given are total bullshit. Any decent lawyer could reduce those charges considerably unless there was significant anti-gaming bias amongst the jury.

That said, I'm sure the issues go deeper than just video games. Look at the situation. It's a stepfather, that ripe for family issues right there. Furthermore, shutting down the system was uncalled for, that would be like shutting down someone's PC while they were on it, talk about rude. Then look at the initial response. The kid threw remotes. Ooo, scary. Why the hell did the stepfather run to a neighbor over a couple of remotes? To call the cops over that, no less? Remember, the kid didn't get a knife until AFTER the stepfather had gone next door and called the cops. All he did was damage some property. He didn't attack the stepfather with a weapon, he tried to fuck up his stepfather's prized possession. Kid probably hates living there, gets disrespected by his stepfather all the time, and decided to knock the bastards ego down a notch. I hope the kid gets off scot-free, or as close to it as possible.
