It's not about greed, it's about some precedents they set at the start when the future was far from certain. They can't just make all the ships dirt cheap now that they've got all the older backers money and equally it would be stupid to stop allowing people to back the game

It's not pay to win because there's no winning. Most of the time you are going to fighting against AI and you can certainly keep it that way. You won't be able to just buy ships when the game comes out, you will be able to buy credits, but only in limited quantities

Just looking through this thread, there is a dangerous amount of mis-information out there

What mis-information? The economy of the game has never looked more pay-to-win than it has now. They even got rid of lifetime insurance. C'mon, you can only go so far with your fanbase before people get weary. How is this not pay-to-win?

But they've addressed lifetime insurace, it's nothing!!!!!!! You have to get insurance anyway, it's added automatically, it is not something to worry about

And if someone's got a bigger ship than you how is it going to affect you? You're just not going to be put in matchmaking with them

Yes, if you have a bigger ship with more cargo, then you can probably make more money, so it's a timesaver rather than winning. There is no real winning!

Insurance stacks, and gets exponentially more expensive the better the ship. You have to have your base ship insured, plus all your upgrades, plus all your cargo. That's gonna take a significant chunk out of your money, especially if you have one of the bigger ships. It's alright for the backers who got multi-month or lifetime insurances, but those who buy the game when it comes out may find themselves losing their ships.

You cannot disable PvP. They said it will be a slider where you can reduce encounters, but never completely get rid of them. What happens when you're in your Hornet that you saved up for 70 hours or so, and then you warp right into a newbie with a Constellation because they spent a lot of real life money? You get crushed if they decide they don't like you or that they want to be a pirate. You then lose your ship, which may take anywhere from a couple of hours to real-life days to get a replacement from the insurance company (especially if you die often in a small period of time). Realistic? Maybe. But it's a system made for those willing to pay up more money after the base price. Unacceptable, especially since there is no way to disable PvP.
