A few reasons I got a PS3 day 1:
- I never had enough money to get a system day 1. Always reasonable, waiting for a price drop, waiting for a more reliable SKU, waiting for cheap games... It's so damn fun and exciting to get a console and try yourself before everything is known and on youtube, before you know the game is crap, just try and feel excitation to know by yourself.
- Even on the highest price, if you get it day 1 and finish the generation with the hardware, it's still very cheap. A lot cheaper than games, or internet, or anything else you pay on a monthly base.
- It's like a support. Basically I wanted Sony to succeed. That's quite stupid, but let's the market decide for you that Sony is has-been or that Nintendo is for kids or that MS has no license... that's quite depressing.

So it was not really about having a must-have game. Still, I was very happy with the launch in fact, really enjoyed motorstorm. Even a very weak game like virtua tennis in 720p had some "enter to the next gen" effect on me. I also download 2 games on the PSN I was very happy. Blast Factor was awesome: cheap, 720p, replayable, I had quite an high score.

What was boring as hell was waiting for PSN update... I was really surprised there were about nothing new to come. For a long time I checked once a week with some kind of expectation and switch off the console because it was uninteresting. I really thought it would be a constant stream of games (at least little games like blast factor) and demos, not a minimal update once a week for 1 or 2 years. Waited for years for Home, I really thought it would be a revolution in gaming, like meet friend online, meet new people with shared passion, launch a game on the fly, seamlessly, with vocal chat. It seems like a joke now.

The reason I didn't get a PS4 is mostly delayed launch in my country (Japan), 4 months late stole all my launch pleasure. The other reason is that it needs no support. It's not like there is 6 months of fun waiting for me... That's was already true for PS3, and didn't change with current generation. So overall, I don't think it changed so much. Even for the Super Nes, we waited more than one year and an half late in Europe, so it came with a lot of game, but the japanese launch was not so big I think.
