This is a debate that will take several decades to conclude. Beliefs erode over time as science stars explaining thing that were unknown before. So far there are still beliefs that linger because scince has not yet provided a definite answer but eventually it will. As far as consciousness, it is the effect from the ability to reason in order to solve problems that enable us to survive which took time to evolve as our brains became larger. Recent studies with chimps show that they have a primative understanding of right and wrong (just recently saw a documentary in PBS) anyways the experiment involved another chimp stealing food and the other chimps punished him, so there goes our uniqueness in that field. Like I said over time all these current beliefs will fade, but it will take a long time and until then this debate will continue.
