Yeah, about this. The light really drains it, it's so bright. It looks cool for the first week, but once the novelty factor wears off you realize that it's killing the controller.

does the light have any practical purposes? or is it simply a gimmicky thing

It's supposed to be used with the PS Eye to do gimmicky things like switch around screens in a split screen match if someone switches places with someone else. Pretty useless, at least for me since I don't plan on getting the PS Eye anytime soon. Just look at how bright the thing is though!
