It's not hate, it's just a dream, that will never come true... Or at least in the near future or not with valve.... Linux user base hasn't moved a bit in forever it oscillates at the bottom between 1 and 2%.... And steam OS won't change that... Most people won't use Linux... And most gamers either...

Most gamers would totally use Linux if it had close to the same level of support that windows has. Why wouldn't they? Nothing beats free. And Linux game performance in some cases actually equals, or even surpasses windows... Provided youre using Nvidia hardware.

And yes, Linux users account for a paltry percentage of the overall PC user base, but 2% is still a hell of a lot of potential customers that need catering to, and you never know what the future may hold. The existence of Steam machines, plus the trend towards more accessibility with most major Linux distributions, could potentially bump that percentage up significantly. I don't think its realistic to expect Steam OS/Linux dethrone windows, and I doubt that's Valves goal, as it doesn't even need to come close to windows to be successful. It really doesnt seem so far fetched to say that they may be able carve out a respectable enough market for it to become a viable alternative for game developers and users alike.
