But why do games like FPS and FIFA get away with it? 

I know there's only so much you can change about a football game as you're bound by realism(to an extent at least), but is it really necessary for yearly releases lol? A simple patch could solve most problems(i.e. up to date team rosters, etc)

I feel some genres can get away with more than other genres. Reviewers are often very strict against jrpgs for example, completely ignoring the fact that those games are made for a Japanese audience. I can imagine Japanese reviews being much better for such games.
