what are you talking about... this is going on everywhere in the world even in europe.... I know for a fact that phone companies (in europe, in france in particular)  charge money to the authorities when thay ask access to the lign to wiretap it.... this is not like they do it randomely.... they have court orders... and even if they didn't at the cost they charge it would dwarf any budget in any nation to do random surveillance.... so cost is prohibitiv to goverment abuse anyway....

It goes on, but its scandalous and company's get bad rep for it. Also, depending on the country it might even be illegal. ING on the Netherlands was recently "attacked" because of it.
