You're from little Finland, no wonder why. Here in the states the anime was a HUGE hit and both the card game and video games did pretty well. Nothing like Pokemon well but in terms of anime, Digimon was arguably even more popular at one point. Back in the 90's there was the big three. Pokemon which was at the top considering everything all around, Digimon followed closely and lastly Monster Rancher which didn't have much success with the anime but did quite well when it came to the video games.

Huh, so it really was popular then. Funny how differently it went over there. Here, Pokemon was a huge hit and every one of my friends at school knew it, probably watched it too. I don't think I ever had a single discussion about Digimon with my friends and if I did, it was probably along the lines of 'a cheap Pokemon clone'. Never heard of Monster Rancher... Just try to guess how popular that was over here! :P Then again, I suppose we have our own Japanese oddities too.

Poor Monster Rancher got slaughtered more than Digimon which is sad because the games were very innovative. You create monsters through the codes in CD's and DVD's. It also goes very in depth about raising monsters. They can become sick, tired or even die if not taking care of. In terms of monster home console releases, Monster Rancher killed the other two. I watched the anime of all three when I was a kid and had at least one game for all of them. Brings me back.
