If you've been paying attention you would notice that the vast majority of people (might even be everyone) that have used the "gimmick" phrase have been doing it to play down VR in general.
And this playing down of VR coincides with Sony's reveal of VR.
But I totally agree, "aren't really a gimmick, they're a legitimate interface" is spot on :)
