9/11 was made possible, primarily, by troubles of interagency cooperation in the US intelligence community. If the FBI and CIA had been properly communicating with each other, they would've pegged the guys who were coming into the country to learn how to fly planes, and the whole thing would have been derailed.
I don't doubt there will be more attacks like the Boston Marathon bombing, but something on the scale of 9/11 is going to be insanely difficult for anyone to pull off ever again. Not unless we go for, like, 75 years without a major attack and these things start to be de-funded or something (course, most of us will likely be dead by then).
