You keep talking about how the OG Xbox was a failure. On what grounds? Profit? It came late in a generation already dominated by its competitor, it was like PS3 vs 360 times 100. So its understandable why it would lose money, investments tend to actually have cost.

In EVERYTHING ... It was a failure market share wise AND profit wise.

Ask yourself, if the OG Xbox was such a failure, why did every console since its release have a hdd and online networking? Dreamcast didn't make it standard neither did PS2.

The original xbox WAS a TOTAL FAILURE and no amount of damage controlling will change that. If you thought the Original Xbox made those a standard then your sadly mistaken because it was it's SUCCESSOR that showed tangible benefits.

Contrary to popular belief, manfacturing in the console gaming realm is an investment, hence the loss leader model that drives it. Sales and quaterly profits, that is just the actualization and realization of return on investment. PS4 is selling on Price and Goodwill, both things that are results of last generation. So to call the Xbox and GameCube failures because their sales were dwarfed by the PS2 is ludicrous.

To say that gamecube and the original xbox were a success is insanity. The loss leader model didn't exactly win last generation when it was the WII who had won without resorting to selling at a loss.

The GameCube was profitable, end of story.

Yet it only made nintendo chum change in the end so it was pretty much a failure in comparison to the N46 ...

The Xbox built the foundation upon which its succesors have profited.
